What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find features on an informational page and tell what each one adds. They connect the added information to the topic or ideas in the main text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to a feature and state the specific fact or idea it adds. They explain how it helps them find information, picture the topic, or understand details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a feature without explaining what information it adds. They may treat maps, graphs, and illustrations as decoration or assume captions simply repeat the paragraph.
How to Assess It
- Give students one informational page with two text features. Ask: “Choose one feature. What does it help you understand that the paragraph alone does not?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a magazine page and sticky notes, then label each feature with one fact it adds to the body text.
Display a page about frogs and ask, “What would be harder to understand if the caption or diagram were removed?”
Play Feature Detective: teams draw a feature card, find an example in nonfiction books, and explain its job for one point.
Examine a zoo map or weather graph and have students explain how it helps a visitor or viewer make a decision.
