What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how an informational text is organized and notice features such as headings, captions, diagrams, and charts. They explain how those choices clarify ideas and support the text’s overall meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly identify a text structure or feature and point to evidence in the text. They clearly explain how it organizes ideas, shows relationships, or clarifies key information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature without explaining what it helps the reader understand. They may confuse the topic with the text structure or say a diagram only makes the page interesting.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with headings and a cause-and-effect section. Ask, “How do one text feature and the text structure help explain the article’s main idea?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up article to sequence, then have them add headings and explain how each choice guides the reader.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which feature could be removed with the greatest loss of meaning, and why?”

  3. Play Structure Sort by having teams match short passages to cause-effect, sequence, compare-contrast, description, or problem-solution cards.

  4. Examine a recipe, news page, or instruction manual and identify how headings, diagrams, and order help readers complete a real task.
