What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the structures and features an author uses, including combinations within one text. They explain how those choices organize ideas and shape purpose or meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately identify more than one structure or feature in a text. They use specific evidence to explain how those choices guide readers, connect ideas, or support the author’s purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students often name a structure, such as cause and effect, but do not explain what it helps the reader understand. They may confuse the topic with the author’s purpose or overlook how headings, charts, and captions shape meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page news article with headings and a chart. Ask them to identify two structures or features and explain how each supports the author’s purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a printed article into sections, then have groups rebuild it and explain how headings, sequence, and visuals guided their choices.

  2. Ask students to write: Which two author choices most shape the article’s message, and what would change if either were removed?

  3. Play a card sort where students match short passages and features to sequence, comparison, cause and effect, problem and solution, or description.

  4. Compare a news website homepage with its print version, then discuss how links, images, captions, and placement affect what readers notice first.
