What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the role of sections and features such as headings, captions, sidebars, charts, introductions, and conclusions. They explain how each part supports the author's purpose or shapes meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a specific section or feature adds information, emphasizes an idea, or guides the reader. They support the explanation with details from the feature and the main text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature without explaining what it adds to the text. They may also confuse the author's purpose with the topic or assume every feature only summarizes information.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with a heading, caption, and chart. Ask them to choose one feature and explain how it shapes the article's meaning, using one detail as evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed article, scissors, and sticky notes; have them label each section or feature with its job in the text.

  2. Students write how the article's meaning would change if the sidebar were removed, using evidence from the sidebar and main text.

  3. Play Feature Match: students pair headings, captions, charts, and text boxes with cards naming each feature's specific contribution.

  4. Compare a news site's headline, photo caption, and infographic, then decide how each shapes a reader's understanding of the event.
