What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what an author wants readers to think, feel, or do. They explain how specific words and sentence structures help the author reach that goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the author’s purpose and support it with precise examples from the text. They explain how connotation, repetition, sentence length, or sentence patterns help produce a specific effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the topic instead of the author’s purpose. They may label words as “strong” or sentences as “short” without explaining how those choices shape the reader’s response.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short editorial and ask: “What is the author trying to accomplish? Cite one word choice and one sentence pattern that support your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a short editorial, then sort its words and sentences by effects such as urgency, trust, humor, or concern.
Ask students to write: Which two language choices most clearly reveal the author’s goal, and how does each affect the reader?
Play Purpose Detective with passage cards, awarding points for matching each claim about purpose to diction and syntax evidence.
Compare two public service announcements on the same issue and explain how each uses wording and sentence length to influence viewers.
