What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create oral or written work that includes useful digital media. They choose media based on the message, purpose, and audience, then explain why each choice helps.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select images, audio, video, graphs, or links that fit the purpose and audience. They place each element where it clarifies information or strengthens a point.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images or sounds only for decoration. They may choose media that repeats the text, distracts the audience, or comes from an unreliable source.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and three possible media additions. Ask them to choose one and explain in two sentences how it helps the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a short article, then have them add one chart and one image that make the main idea clearer.

  2. Ask students to explain which would best support a safety presentation: a diagram, background music, or a reaction meme.

  3. Play Media Match by having teams pair five presentation claims with the most useful image, graph, audio clip, or video.

  4. Have students redesign a school club announcement with a photo, QR code, and layout choices aimed at sixth-grade students.
