What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create and improve a piece of writing in a word processor or similar program. They type, revise, format, save, and share their work using appropriate features.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can create, revise, format, save, and share a clear piece of writing independently. They use spelling tools, comments, and formatting choices without letting those features distract from meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spend more time choosing fonts and colors than improving the writing. They may trust every spelling suggestion, miss incorrect homophones, or forget to save and name the file clearly.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Create a new document, write four sentences about a school rule, correct one error, add a title, and submit the file.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a paper paragraph with editing marks, then have them make every change in a shared document and highlight completed revisions.
Prompt students to compare typing, voice typing, and handwriting, then write which tool best fits drafting, revising, and publishing.
Run a formatting relay where teams fix headings, paragraph breaks, spacing, and file names without changing the writer’s meaning.
Have students create a one-page digital flyer for a school event, including clear text, headings, and a working link.
