CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.C.7
The standard
Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Counting and Cardinality
What this standard means
Students need to look at two written numerals from 1 to 10 and tell which number is greater, which is less, or if they are the same. They are comparing the numerals themselves, not just counting objects.
Mastery looks like quick, accurate choices with pairs like 3 and 8, 10 and 6, or 5 and 5. Students often get stuck when they can count objects but do not connect the written numeral to its value. Reversals, like confusing 6 and 9, can also cause errors.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students numeral cards 1 to 10 and linking cubes, then have them build each number and place the greater card on top.
- Prompt: Show 4 and 7, then ask, “Which number is greater, and how do you know?”
- Quick assessment: Flash two numeral cards and have students point to the greater number, then try one pair that is equal.
- Real-world connection: Compare two classroom table numbers, bus numbers, or page numbers and decide which number is greater.
