Find the point on a directed line segment between two given points that partitions the segment in a given ratio.

What this standard means
Students need to find a point that splits a segment into a given ratio, using coordinates. They should understand that a 2:3 split means 2 parts from the first point and 3 parts to the second point, not halfway. They need to work with both x and y values.
Mastery looks like setting up the ratio in the right direction, calculating each coordinate, and checking the point lies between the endpoints. Students often reverse the ratio, add the parts incorrectly, or forget that the segment is directed, so the starting point matters.
Ways to teach it
- Have students use graph paper and string to mark a segment, then physically divide it into ratio parts before calculating coordinates.
- Ask students to explain why a point that splits AB in a 1:4 ratio is closer to A than to B.
- Give two endpoints and a 3:2 ratio, then ask students to find the point and plot it as an exit ticket.
- Use a map grid and ask students to find where a bus stop should go two-fifths of the way between two landmarks.
