CCSS.Math.Content.HSF-LE.A.2
The standard
Construct linear and exponential functions, including arithmetic and geometric sequences, given a graph, a description of a relationship, or two input-output pairs (include reading these from a table).
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to build a rule from a graph, table, story, or two points. They decide if the pattern adds the same amount or multiplies by the same factor. Then they write a linear or exponential function, including sequence notation when the inputs are whole-number steps.
Mastery looks like choosing the right model, finding the starting value and rate or factor, and using the rule to predict new values. Students often mix up adding and multiplying, use the wrong starting value, or treat the first term of a sequence as the y-intercept.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs cut-up tables, graphs, and stories, then have them sort each as linear or exponential and write the matching function.
- Ask students to explain in writing how they know whether a pattern grows by equal differences or equal ratios.
- Use an exit ticket with two input-output pairs and ask students to write the function and name the model type.
- Show a simple savings plan with weekly deposits and another with percent growth, then compare the rules students write.
