CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.7
The standard
Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Measurement and Data
What this standard means
Students need to read an analog clock by fives, name the hour, and write the matching digital time. They also need to connect times to a.m. or p.m. based on what is happening, like breakfast, school, dinner, or bedtime.
Mastery looks like reading 3:25, 8:55, and 12:05 without counting every minute mark one by one. Students often mix up the hour hand when it is close to the next hour. They may also write 7:5 instead of 7:05, or choose p.m. for morning routines.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs mini clocks and call out times like 4:35, then have them build, show, and write each time on whiteboards.
- Ask students to write two daily events, one a.m. and one p.m., with the time each event usually happens.
- Show five clock cards and have students write the digital time and circle a.m. or p.m. for each pictured event.
- Use a school day schedule and have students match analog clock cards to arrival, lunch, recess, dismissal, and bedtime.
