The standard

Tell and write time.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to read clocks and write matching times. They should connect the hour hand and minute hand to spoken time, written time, and daily routines. In grade 1, keep the focus on hours and half hours, using both analog and digital clocks.

Mastery looks like a student saying “3 o’clock” or “half past 7,” then writing 3:00 or 7:30 and setting it on a model clock. Common trouble spots are mixing up the two hands, thinking the hour hand must point exactly at the number during half hours, and writing 6:30 when the minute hand is on the 6 but the hour hand is near the wrong hour.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs paper plate clocks with movable hands and call out times like 4:00, 9:30, and half past 2.
  • Discussion or writing prompt: Ask, “What time do you eat lunch, and what would that look like on an analog clock?”
  • Quick assessment: Show five clock pictures and have students write the digital time on sticky notes before holding them up.
  • Real-world connection: Use the class schedule and have students match recess, lunch, and dismissal to analog and digital clock times.
