Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards: Foundational Skills
What This Standard Means
Students need to use phonics patterns to read unfamiliar words, not just guess from pictures or first letters. They should break words into parts, use vowel teams, common prefixes and suffixes, irregular spelling patterns, and syllable clues to figure out words accurately.
Mastery looks like a student pausing, trying a strategy, and reading the word correctly in a sentence. Students often get stuck on vowel sounds, words with more than one syllable, and irregular words that do not follow the usual pattern. Some can decode in isolation but lose accuracy during real reading.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students word cards with vowel teams, have them sort by sound, then read each pile aloud with a partner.
- Ask students to write, “When I get stuck on a word, I can…” and list three decoding moves with examples.
- Listen to each student read five new words and one sentence, then note which phonics pattern caused errors.
- Bring in a menu, flyer, or sports schedule and have students highlight words they can decode using known patterns.
