What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use sound-spelling patterns and familiar word parts to read unfamiliar words. They blend sounds, break longer words into syllables, and recognize common irregular words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read unfamiliar one-syllable and two-syllable words in lists and short passages. They use vowel patterns, syllables, and affixes instead of guessing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the picture or first letter instead of reading the whole word. They may misread vowel teams, overlook prefixes and suffixes, or sound out irregular words literally.

How to Assess It

Give students the words team, turn, replay, hopeful, sunset, and could. Ask them to read each word, mark useful parts, and explain how they decoded one word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use letter tiles to build words such as play, replay, hope, and hopeful, then have students mark the base word and affixes.

  2. Ask students to write how they would decode sunset, including where they split the word and which sounds they blended.

  3. Play partner word bingo using cards with vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, prefixes, suffixes, and common irregular words.

  4. Have students find five words on classroom labels or food packages, then underline familiar patterns and read each word aloud.
