Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to read words with common vowel teams beyond the basics, such as ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, oi, oy, ou, and ue. They should connect the letters they see to the vowel sound they hear, then blend the whole word accurately.

Mastery looks like reading unfamiliar words such as train, beach, float, coin, toy, cloud, and blue without guessing from the first letter. Students often get stuck when one team has more than one sound, like ea in beach and bread, or when they confuse similar teams like ow and ou.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on: Give students vowel team cards and picture cards, then have them match, read, and sort words like rain, boat, coin, and cloud.
  • Prompt: Ask students, “Which vowel team did you notice in this word, and what sound did it make?” after reading a short list.
  • Quick check: Show five word cards with vowel teams and have each student read them aloud, then underline the vowel team.
  • Real-world: Have students search a lunch menu, book page, or classroom sign for vowel team words and read them to a partner.
