Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards: Foundational Skills
What This Standard Means
Kindergarteners need to connect letters with sounds and use that knowledge to read simple words. They should recognize common consonant sounds, short vowel sounds, and high-frequency words. They also need to blend sounds in CVC words like map, sit, and hen.
Mastery looks like a child pointing to each letter sound, blending smoothly, and checking if the word makes sense. Many students get stuck on vowels, similar letters like b and d, or guessing from the first letter instead of reading through the whole word.
Ways to Teach It
- Use magnetic letters to build CVC words, then have students tap each sound and slide a finger to blend the word.
- Ask students, “How did you know that word was sun and not sit?” after reading a short decodable sentence.
- Show five CVC word cards and ask each student to read three aloud while you note vowel and blending errors.
- Have students read simple labels on classroom items, such as bin, cup, mat, and bag, then sort them by beginning sound.
