What This Standard Means

Students need to figure out unfamiliar words and phrases while reading, not just stop and ask. They should use context clues, word parts, dictionaries, glossaries, and online tools. They also need to handle words with more than one meaning by checking how the word works in that sentence.

Mastery looks like a student explaining which strategy they used and why the meaning fits the passage. Common trouble spots are grabbing the first dictionary definition, ignoring prefixes or roots, and choosing a meaning that sounds right but does not match the sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short article with six underlined words, then have them mark context clues and word parts before checking a dictionary.
  • Ask students to write: Which clue helped you most with today’s hardest word, and why did that meaning fit?
  • Use an exit ticket with one sentence, one bold word, and three possible meanings, asking students to explain their choice.
  • Bring in a sports recap, recipe, or phone review and have students find a word whose meaning changes by context.
