What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words using context, word parts, and reference tools. They choose a useful strategy, then check that the meaning fits the passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a meaning that fits the sentence and the larger passage. They explain the clues they used and confirm the meaning with another strategy or reference source.

Common Misconceptions

Students often choose the first familiar or dictionary meaning, even when it does not fit the passage. They may treat one context clue or word part as complete proof.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The bridge could not sustain the weight of the trucks.” Define “sustain,” underline a clue, and name one way to verify.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence cards, word-part cards, and dictionary entries to match, then have them explain each match.

  2. Ask students to write how the meaning of “strike” changes in three different sentences.

  3. Play a clue challenge where teams identify an unknown word’s meaning and earn points for naming the strategy used.

  4. Examine words from a medicine label or job posting, then use context and a reference source to clarify each meaning.
