CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.8.4a
The Standard
Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to figure out unfamiliar words by reading around them. They should use the sentence, nearby sentences, punctuation, examples, contrasts, and the word’s job in the sentence to make a reasonable meaning guess.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “I think this word means ___ because the next sentence says ___,” then checking if the meaning fits. Students often grab only one clue, ignore tone, or choose a definition that fits the word but not the passage.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a short paragraph with three blanked-out words, then have them write likely meanings and underline the clues they used.
- Ask students to explain, in two sentences, how a surrounding sentence helped them figure out one unfamiliar word from today’s reading.
- Show four sentences with the same unknown word, and have students choose the best meaning for each context on a sticky note.
- Use a news article headline and first paragraph, then have students infer one tricky word before checking a dictionary.
