What This Standard Means

Students need to figure out unfamiliar words and phrases while reading, not just skip them or ask for the definition. They should use context, word parts, dictionaries, glossaries, and digital tools. They also need to handle words with more than one meaning and choose the meaning that fits the sentence.

Mastery looks like a student explaining how they figured out a word, then using it correctly in speech or writing. Students often get stuck by grabbing the first dictionary definition, ignoring nearby clues, or missing how prefixes, suffixes, and roots change meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short article with bolded unfamiliar words and have them annotate context clues, word parts, and final meanings in the margins.
  • Ask students to explain which strategy helped most with one hard word today and why that strategy worked.
  • Use a three-question exit ticket with one context clue word, one word part word, and one multiple-meaning word.
  • Bring in a menu, game review, or sports article and have students identify words whose meanings change by context.
