What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference in observations, descriptions, and wave diagrams. They explain how a wave’s direction or amplitude changes during each interaction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can predict what happens when a wave meets a boundary, enters a new medium, passes through an opening, or overlaps another wave. They can draw and explain constructive and destructive interference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think waves carry matter forward or disappear when their amplitude decreases. They may confuse refraction with reflection or assume overlapping waves always produce a larger amplitude.
How to Assess It
- Give students sketches of a reflected pulse, a bent light ray, ripples through a gap, and two overlapping pulses. Ask them to label and explain each interaction.

Ways to Teach It
At four stations, send rope pulses together, bounce a flashlight off a mirror, view a pencil in water, and pass ripples through a gap.
Ask, “How are an echo, a bent straw, and noise-canceling headphones caused by different wave interactions?”
Give teams scenario cards to sort as reflection, refraction, diffraction, constructive interference, or destructive interference, then require one-sentence evidence.
Show an ultrasound image and have students mark where reflected sound waves created boundaries between body tissues.
