What Students Need to Do: Students use diagrams, physical objects, equations, or computer simulations to explain and predict how a physical system behaves. They compare the model with evidence and identify features the model leaves out or oversimplifies.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain what a model represents, make a prediction with it, and compare that prediction with observed results. They can name a specific limitation and suggest a useful revision.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a model must look exactly like the object or that one model can answer every question. They may also call a model wrong without identifying which assumption, scale, or missing feature caused the mismatch.
How to Assess It: Show students a ball-and-stick model of a water molecule. Ask them to name one useful feature, one limitation, and one question the model cannot answer.
