What Students Need to Do: Students use physical, visual, or computer models to explain a system or make a prediction. They identify what each model represents accurately and what it leaves out. They explain how those limits affect the model's usefulness.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare a model with the real object or system. They can name specific strengths and limits, such as inaccurate scale or missing parts. They can suggest a useful improvement without claiming the model can show everything.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a model must look exactly like the real object. They may treat a model's limits as mistakes that make it useless. They may also overlook scale, motion, time, and unseen processes.
How to Assess It: Show students a flat diagram of the solar system. Ask them to name one useful feature, one limitation, and one change that would improve it.

Lesson moves

Write: How can a model be useful even when it is not completely accurate? Support your answer with one example.
