What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the object, system, or event it represents. They identify missing details, incorrect scale, or features that do not behave like the real thing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a specific limit and support it with evidence from the model. The student can explain how that limit affects what the model can show or predict.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a detailed model is always accurate or that a model must look exactly like the real object. They may name a difference without explaining why it limits the model.
How to Assess It
- Show students a globe and ask, “Name one way this model differs from Earth, and explain what the globe cannot show accurately.”

Build a clay volcano model, then list features it cannot represent, such as heat, pressure, rock layers, and eruption timing.
Compare a map with an aerial photograph and write which details each leaves out or changes.
