What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn an observed need into a clear, testable problem statement. They ask focused questions, identify criteria and limits, then sketch a workable solution.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain who has the problem, what needs to change, and what limits the design. The student proposes a simple solution that matches the stated criteria.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a broad topic instead of a specific problem, or suggest a solution before gathering details. They may ignore limits such as cost, materials, size, or safety.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Our classroom headphones become tangled in storage.” Ask them to write two questions, one problem statement, and one labeled solution sketch.

Give teams straws, tape, and paper, then have them define and solve the problem of protecting a dropped cotton ball.
Ask students to write which questions they would ask before designing a lunch container that keeps food cold.
