What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a design problem and ask focused questions about the need, criteria, and limits. They propose a simple solution that could be built and tested.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students describe who has the problem, what a successful solution must do, and what limits apply. Their proposed solution addresses the stated problem and can be tested with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask broad questions that cannot guide a design. They may confuse a scientific question with a design problem or suggest a solution that ignores cost, materials, time, or safety.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Seedlings dry out over the weekend. Write two useful questions, define the problem, and sketch one testable solution.”

Ways to Teach It
Give teams cups, string, sponges, and bottles to build a device that keeps a plant watered for two days.
Ask students to write: “What questions should we answer before designing a classroom compost bin?”
Play a card sort matching design problems with criteria, constraints, useful questions, and possible solutions.
