What Students Need to Do: Students ask focused questions to clarify a design need, success criteria, and limits. They define the problem and propose a simple solution that fits those limits.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a design scenario, a student can write a clear problem statement and identify criteria and constraints. The student can sketch a workable solution and explain how it addresses the need.
Common Misconceptions: Students may jump to building before clarifying the problem. They may confuse criteria with constraints or write questions unrelated to the design need. Proposed solutions may ignore limits such as materials, cost, time, or safety.
How to Assess It: Give this prompt: Design a desk organizer using one sheet of cardstock and 30 centimeters of tape that holds five pencils. Ask students to list three questions, define the problem, and sketch a labeled solution.

Lesson moves

Give teams straws, tape, and an index card to define and solve the problem of building a stable phone stand.
Ask students to write which questions they would ask before designing a container that keeps a sandwich from being crushed.
Use scenario cards to sort details into criteria, constraints, or irrelevant information, then have teams pitch one possible solution.
Have students identify a recurring classroom problem, interview two classmates about it, and sketch a solution that uses available materials.
