What Students Need to Do: Students identify sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. They explain how each sense gives information about objects, people, places, and possible danger.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students match each sense to the correct body part and a familiar action. They can explain which senses they use during activities such as eating or crossing a street.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think touch happens only through the hands. They may confuse taste with smell or name a body part instead of the sense. Some think people use only one sense at a time.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a child crossing a street. Ask, “Which two senses could help this child stay safe, and how?”

Lesson moves

Place safe classroom objects in a mystery bag; students feel one object, describe its properties, then look to check their guess.
Ask, “How do your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin help you during lunch?” and record one example for each.
Play Sense Sort with picture cards showing actions such as smelling flowers, hearing a bell, tasting soup, and touching ice.
Take a school safety walk and have students point out where sight, hearing, smell, or touch helps them make safe choices.
