What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. They match each sense to eyes, ears, nose, tongue, or skin and describe when they use it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can correctly pair all five senses with their body parts. The student can describe how sensory information leads to an action, such as moving away from a loud sound.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think touch happens only through the hands instead of the skin. They may also think only one sense works at a time or confuse taste with smell.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a ringing phone. Ask each student to name the sense and body part used, then tell one possible response.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Rotate through stations with a bell, texture bag, scent jar, picture card, and allergy-safe food sample, then name each sense used.

  2. Draw a daily activity, label the body parts you use, and explain which senses help you complete it.

  3. Play a matching game that pairs picture cards of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin with sense and object cards.

  4. Take a school safety walk and have students point out what they see or hear that tells them to stop, wait, or move.
