What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how runoff, erosion, weather, land use, organisms, and water conditions affect watershed health. They trace how a change upstream can affect water quality and life downstream.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a watershed scenario, students predict changes in sediment, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and organism populations. They support each prediction with a clear cause-and-effect chain.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a watershed is only the stream or lake, rather than all land draining into it. They may assume clear water is clean, confuse biotic and abiotic factors, or label all human activity as harmful.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: “A parking lot replaces a grassy field beside a creek. Predict two effects on the watershed and explain each one.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build watershed trays with soil, grass, and foil pavement, spray equal water on each, then compare runoff amount and cloudiness.

  2. Write a claim explaining how removing streamside trees could affect water temperature, erosion, dissolved oxygen, and fish.

  3. Play a cause-and-effect card match using cards for fertilizer, algae growth, oxygen loss, erosion, pavement, sediment, and organism decline.

  4. Use a local watershed map to identify one possible pollution source and propose a specific action that could reduce its impact.
