What Students Need to Do: Students identify matter in the Sun, planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, meteoroids, gas, and dust. They describe where these are found and explain that the Sun contains nearly all the solar system's mass.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can label major objects and materials on a simple solar system model. They can explain that matter is spread unevenly, with most mass in the Sun.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think planets contain most of the mass or that matter is spread evenly. They may also picture the asteroid belt as tightly packed or assume empty-looking space contains no gas or dust.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw and label the Sun, a planet, a moon, the asteroid belt, a comet, and dust. Have them circle where most mass is located.

Lesson moves

Give groups 500 counters, assign 499 to the Sun, then use the last counter to represent every other solar system object.
Ask: If planets look large in diagrams, why does the Sun still hold nearly all the solar system's mass?
Run a card-sort race placing object cards on a floor map, then require teams to defend each placement.
Inspect a meteorite photo and trace its likely path from a meteoroid in space to matter collected on Earth.
