What Students Need to Do

Students identify solids, liquids, and gases as matter. They use a balance, container, or syringe to gather evidence that each has mass and fills space.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can classify a rock, water, and air as matter and give evidence for each. The student chooses a suitable test using a balance or container.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only solid objects are matter, or that air is nothing. They may confuse mass with size and assume larger objects always have more mass.

How to Assess It

Show a rock, a cup of water, and air trapped in a syringe. Ask, “Are all three matter? Name one observation or test that supports your answer.”

  1. Weigh a flat ball before and after inflation, then use a capped syringe to show that trapped air resists being squeezed.
