What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the eight planets and place them in order from the Sun. They compare traits such as size, temperature, composition, rings, and moons.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly arrange all eight planets without a reference chart. They describe each planet using accurate traits and group planets as rocky planets, gas giants, or ice giants.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may include Pluto among the eight planets or place Earth first. They may think every planet has a solid surface or that larger planets are always farther from the Sun.
How to Assess It
- Give students eight shuffled planet cards. Ask them to arrange the cards from the Sun outward and write one accurate trait for two planets.

Give groups planet picture cards to order, then sort them into rocky planets, gas giants, and ice giants.
Ask, “Which planet would be hardest to visit, and why?” Require evidence about distance, temperature, surface, or atmosphere.
Play Planet Riddle Relay, where teams identify a planet from three clues and place its card in the correct position.
Show a NASA spacecraft image, then have students identify the planet and explain which visible features support their answer.
