What Students Need to Do: Students distinguish rotation from revolution. They model how a planet spins around an axis while traveling in an orbit around the sun.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label rotation, axis, revolution, and orbit in a diagram or model. They explain that both motions happen at the same time.
Common Misconceptions: Students may use rotation and revolution as if they mean the same motion. They may think planets stop spinning while orbiting or that the sun moves around every planet.
How to Assess It: Give students a sun and planet diagram. Ask them to draw and label one arrow for rotation and one for revolution, then explain each motion.

Lesson moves

Place a ball on a tilted pencil axis, then spin it while carrying it in a circle around a lamp.
Ask students to write how rotation and revolution differ, using the words axis, spin, orbit, and sun.
Play a motion sorting game where students place picture cards under rotation, revolution, or both.
Use Earth clocks and calendars to connect one full rotation with a day and one full revolution with a year.
