What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create models that show how a system or object works. They use a stated scale to represent and estimate distances. They revise models using evidence, make predictions, and identify what each model leaves out.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students calculate actual distances from a scale model and explain their reasoning. They use a model to predict an outcome, revise it after new evidence, and describe at least one limitation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a model as an exact copy rather than a simplified representation. They may apply a scale inconsistently, confuse model distance with actual distance, or revise a model without using evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map where 1 centimeter represents 5 kilometers and two points are 3.5 centimeters apart. Ask for the actual distance, one prediction the map supports, and one limitation.

Ways to Teach It
Build a scaled classroom model with grid paper, then measure model distances and calculate the matching classroom distances.
Show two weather models and ask, "Which prediction seems better supported, and what information is missing from each model?"
Play Model Revision Relay, where teams update a diagram after receiving evidence cards and explain each change.
Use a local transit map to estimate trip distances, predict the shortest route, and identify features the map does not represent.
