Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students tell whether an item is a real object or a representation of one. They explain what the representation shows about the real object.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly sorts examples such as a toy car, globe, photograph, and real leaf. The student names one way each representation differs from the real object.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a small copy is real because it looks accurate. They may also think only three-dimensional objects count as representations, excluding maps, drawings, and photographs.
How to Assess It: Show a real apple and a plastic apple. Ask, “Which is the real object, which represents it, and how can you tell?”

Lesson moves

Place real objects beside clay copies, then have students sort and explain each choice.
Show a toy animal and ask, “How is this like the real animal, and how is it different?”
Play Model or Real by holding up objects and pictures while students point to labeled corners of the room.
Use a classroom map to find the door, tables, and sink, then compare each symbol with the actual item.
