What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell whether an item is the real object or something made to represent it. They point to features that help them decide, such as size, material, and function.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort real objects and representations correctly. The student can explain a choice with a simple reason, such as, “The toy apple cannot grow or be eaten.”

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any object they can touch real, including a plastic animal or toy car. They may also think a representation must look exactly like the object or work the same way.

How to Assess It

Show a real leaf and a plastic leaf. Ask, “Which came from a plant, and which was made to show what a leaf looks like?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place real fruit beside plastic fruit, then have students sort each item and name one clue that helped them decide.

  2. Show a globe and ask, “How is this like Earth, and how is it different from Earth?”

  3. Play Model or Real by holding up classroom items and having students move to labeled corners before explaining one choice.

  4. Compare a real school bus with a toy bus, then discuss why builders might use a small version before making the real bus.
