What Students Need to Do: Students use weather records from many years to find repeated temperature and precipitation patterns across seasons. They use those patterns to describe usual regional conditions, rather than predict one day’s weather.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a graph of seasonal averages gathered across many years, a student identifies recurring temperature and precipitation patterns. The student compares two regions and supports each description with values from the graph.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call today’s rain the climate or use one unusual storm to describe a place. They may think climate means temperature only and ignore precipitation. They may also expect every year to match the pattern across many years exactly.
How to Assess It: Show these ten year seasonal averages: Region A has 4°C winters and 27°C summers, while Region B has 14°C winters and 34°C summers. Ask students to describe one climate difference and cite two values.

Lesson moves

Give groups ten years of monthly temperature and precipitation cards, then have them sort by season and graph the seasonal averages.
Ask, “Why can one snowy day not describe a region’s climate?” Students answer with evidence from a graph covering many years.
Play Climate Match: students pair seasonal graphs covering many years with region descriptions, then justify each match to a partner.
Use local climate records to choose the best month for a class garden, citing typical temperature and rainfall patterns.
