What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify weather conditions using signs such as cloud cover, wind, temperature, and precipitation. They collect weather data, find patterns, and use forecasts to choose safe preparations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately use a thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane, and weather chart. They compare several days of data, describe a pattern, and explain how people should prepare for expected weather.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse weather with seasons or think cold weather always means snow. They may treat a single observation as a pattern or believe forecasts are always certain.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-day weather chart. Ask them to name one pattern, predict the next day’s weather, and list one preparation for it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a thermometer, rain gauge, and wind vane outside, then record measurements on a class chart for five days.

  2. Show two weather forecasts and ask, "What evidence shows how people should dress or prepare for each day?"

  3. Play Weather Pattern Detective by giving teams data cards to order, compare, and use to predict the next day.

  4. Use a local storm forecast to create a picture checklist of supplies and actions families can use to prepare safely.
