What Students Need to Do: Students record weather conditions over several days and look for changes or patterns. They use those records and a forecast to choose safe ways to prepare for weather or storms.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can track temperature, clouds, wind, and rain on a simple chart. They can use the chart or a forecast to explain what clothing, supplies, or safety steps are needed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a forecast tells exactly what will happen rather than what is likely. They may also confuse daily weather with seasons or think all storms require the same safety steps.
How to Assess It: Give students a three-day forecast showing falling temperatures and a storm on day three. Ask them to name two preparations and explain how the forecast supports each choice.

Lesson moves

Set up a class weather station with a thermometer, windsock, rain gauge, and daily observation chart.
Show a storm forecast and ask students to write: What should our class do before the storm, and why?
Match weather cards, such as heavy rain or strong wind, with preparation cards, such as boots, flashlights, or staying indoors.
Check tomorrow’s local forecast, then have students create a short checklist for getting ready for school and outdoor plans.
