What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe and record temperature, sunlight, and rain or snow across several days. They connect weather patterns to seasons. They explain how weather changes what people, plants, and animals do.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students describe the day's weather using observations or simple measurements. They identify likely weather for each season and give reasonable examples. They explain one way a weather change affects a living thing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every winter day is snowy or every summer day is hot. They may confuse weather, which changes daily, with seasons. They may think plants and animals are unaffected by changes in sunlight, temperature, or rain.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “A cold week has little sunlight and snow. Draw and label one effect on a person, plant, or animal.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure outdoor temperature, observe cloud cover, and check a rain gauge each morning for one week, then make a class weather chart.

  2. Show two seasonal pictures and ask, “What weather clues tell you the season, and how do living things respond?”

  3. Play a card sort matching weather cards, season cards, clothing cards, and plant or animal response cards.

  4. Give a local weekend forecast and have students draw suitable clothing and one outdoor activity that fits the weather.
