What Students Need to Do: Students connect warmer or cooler conditions, sunlight, rain, and snow to changes in living things. They explain how plants, animals, and people respond to those conditions.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can predict what may happen to a plant, animal, or person when weather conditions change. The student gives a sensible reason for each prediction.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rain always helps every living thing or that all plants need the same amount of sunlight. They may confuse a living thing’s response with the weather condition itself.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a hot, dry day. Ask, “How might this weather affect one plant, one animal, and one person?”

Lesson moves

Give groups weather cards and living thing cards, then have them match each condition to a likely response.
Ask students to write or discuss, “What changes at the playground on a cold, rainy day, and why?”
Play Weather Response Charades, where students act out how a plant, animal, or person responds to a weather card.
Visit the schoolyard, record the weather, and list three ways plants, animals, or people are responding to it.
