What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students test how pushes, pulls, gravity, and magnets change an object's motion. They describe whether the object starts, stops, speeds up, slows down, or changes direction.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can predict and explain how a force will affect a familiar object. They can tell whether objects must touch and name a practical use for the force.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every force requires touching or that magnets attract every metal object. They may also think gravity acts only on objects that are already falling.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a magnet pulling a paper clip across a table. Ask, "What force moves the clip, and how do you know?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Roll toy cars down ramps, then use gentle and strong pushes to compare changes in speed, direction, and distance.

  2. Ask students to explain how a dropped ball and a moving paper clip can both move without being touched.

  3. Sort scenario cards into contact, gravity, or magnetism, then predict how each object's motion will change.

  4. Test playground equipment and identify the pushes, pulls, and gravity involved in using a swing, slide, or seesaw.
