What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe that gravity and magnets can make objects move without direct contact. They predict, test, and name the force causing each movement.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a magnet to push or pull an object without touching it. They can explain that gravity pulls a released object toward Earth.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all metals are attracted to magnets or that magnets only pull. They may also think gravity acts only on falling objects.
How to Assess It
- Show a paper clip moving toward a magnet and a block falling. Ask students to name the force causing each motion and explain their evidence.

Use a bar magnet, paper clips, craft sticks, and plastic cubes to test which objects move without direct contact.
Ask students to write: How are a falling pencil and a moving paper clip alike, and how are they different?
