What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what animals need to stay alive and explain how a habitat provides those needs. They connect body parts, such as wings, teeth, or webbed feet, to their jobs. They also group animals by shared traits and explain their sorting rule.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can examine an animal picture and name its likely food, water source, shelter, and space. The student can explain how one body part helps the animal and classify it using an observable trait.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every animal eats the same food or lives in a built shelter. They may group animals only by size or color, or name a body part without explaining its function.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a duck in a pond. Ask students to name three needs met there, explain how webbed feet help, and give one way to classify the duck.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a model habitat in a tray using toy animals, water cups, craft food, shelters, and open space.

  2. Ask students to draw an animal and write how one body part helps it find food, move, or stay safe.

  3. Play Animal Sort Relay by having teams place picture cards into groups, then state the trait used for each group.

  4. Walk around the schoolyard and record where animals could find water, food, shelter, and enough space.
