What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the sunlight, water, air, minerals, and space a plant uses to live and grow. They explain the jobs of plant parts and sort plants by visible traits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds on a plant or picture. They can describe each part’s job and explain their rule for sorting plants.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think plants get food directly from soil or that flowers are only decoration. They may also sort plants by where they found them instead of a shared physical trait.
How to Assess It
- Give students a plant picture and ask them to label three parts, describe each job, and circle two things the plant needs from its surroundings.

Ways to Teach It
Place celery stalks in colored water, then observe and draw how water moves through the stem.
Ask, “What would happen if a plant had water and soil but stayed in a dark closet?”
Give pairs plant picture cards and challenge them to sort twice, using a different visible trait each time.
Walk around the schoolyard and record where plants find light, water, space, and support for growth.
