What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. They explain how each part helps a plant live, grow, or reproduce.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label the main parts on a real plant or picture. They can match each part to its job and give a simple reason for the match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants get food from soil or that roots only hold plants in place. They may think flowers are only decorative or confuse fruits with seeds.
How to Assess It
- Give students a plant diagram and ask them to label the roots, stem, and leaves. Have them write or tell one job for each part.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a small plant to observe, then attach paper labels naming each structure and its job.
Ask, "What might happen if a plant had no roots?" and have students draw and explain their answer.
Play a matching game with plant-part cards and function cards, such as leaf and makes food.
Examine a classroom plant and discuss which structures a gardener checks when the plant looks wilted or unhealthy.
