What Students Need to Do: Students observe animals and name traits such as body covering, body parts, and movement. They sort the same animals in different ways and explain the trait used for each group.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can place animals into groups using a clear, consistent rule. The student can explain why each animal belongs and sort the set again using a different trait.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think there is only one correct way to group animals. They may sort by personal preference or assume every flying animal is a bird and every swimming animal is a fish.
How to Assess It: Give students six animal pictures. Ask them to sort the pictures two different ways, label each sorting rule, and explain one animal placement.

Lesson moves

Give pairs plastic animals to sort first by body covering, then by number of legs, and ask them to name each rule.
Prompt: How could a bat and a bird belong together in one sort but not another?
Play Mystery Sort with animal cards: one student makes two groups, while classmates infer the trait used.
Use local wildlife photos and have students group the animals by visible traits a field scientist could record.
