What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare organisms using shared observable traits and group them based on those traits. They explain which characteristics support each grouping and identify traits that separate one group from another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students sort unfamiliar organisms consistently and defend each group with specific evidence. They can revise a grouping when new trait information is provided.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may group organisms only by habitat, size, color, or how they move. They may assume organisms that look alike are always closely related or that one trait is enough to classify them.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of six organisms and ask them to make two groups. Have them name the shared trait for each group and explain one placement.

Provide organism cards and have teams sort them three different ways, labeling the trait used for each sort.
Ask students to write which traits are most useful for grouping a bat, bird, butterfly, and flying squirrel, then defend their choices.
