What Students Need to Do: Students compare organisms using visible traits, such as body covering, number of legs, leaf shape, or wing type. They follow a simple classification key to identify an unknown organism.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given organism pictures and a classification key, students follow each choice correctly and reach an accurate identification. They can name the traits that support their answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may group organisms only by habitat, color, or size instead of using several structural traits. They may skip steps in a key or choose a trait that is not shown.
How to Assess It: Give students a four-step classification key and a picture of a mystery animal. Ask them to identify it and list each choice they followed.

Lesson moves

Give pairs six local leaves to sort by edge, shape, and vein pattern, then have them write a simple identification key.
Ask students to write which traits would best separate a bat, bird, butterfly, and bee, then explain their choices.
Play Mystery Organism with picture cards, allowing teams ten yes-or-no trait questions before they identify each organism.
Use a local field guide to identify one schoolyard tree, then record the leaf traits and classification steps used.
