MathKindergartenNumber and Number Sense

The Standard

Group a collection of up to 100 objects (e.g., counters, pennies, cubes) into sets of ten and count by tens to determine the total (e.g., there are 3 groups of ten and 6 leftovers, 36 total objects).

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will utilize flexible counting strategies to determine and describe quantities up to 100.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize a mixed collection into groups of 10, then identify any objects left over. They count the full groups by tens and continue with the leftovers to name the total.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a collection, a student makes accurate groups of 10 without skipping or reusing objects. The student can say, “4 tens and 7 more makes 47,” and check the count.

Common Misconceptions

Students may make groups that do not contain exactly 10, or leave objects ungrouped before forming all possible tens. Some count four groups as 4 instead of 40. Others name 3 tens and 6 more as 63.

How to Assess It

Give each student 34 counters and four ten-frames. Say, “Make groups of 10, then tell me the total and how you know.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 58 linking cubes to build trains of 10, count the trains by tens, then count the loose cubes.

  2. Show 42 counters grouped by tens and ask, “How do the groups help you know the total without counting every counter?”

  3. Play Grab and Group: students draw a number card, collect that many counters, make tens, and earn a point for naming the total.

  4. Have students sort 67 classroom pencils into bundles of 10, then label the number of bundles, extras, and total pencils.
