What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count a group containing only pennies, only nickels, or only dimes. They count by ones, fives, or tens and state the total value in cents.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize like coins, choose the matching count pattern, and find the total accurately. The student labels the answer in cents and can explain the counting strategy used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the number of coins instead of their value, reporting 12 cents for 12 nickels. They may skip a number while counting by fives or tens, or confuse nickels and dimes.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show 23 pennies, 12 nickels, and 9 dimes in separate groups. Have students write each total with the cent symbol.
